FAQs - HEK 293 Media

The cell culture medium used to culture a virus greatly depends on the requirements of the host cell line. Specialty media provide the optimum quantity of nutrients to allow for cell growth and support virus infection and production. Among the human cell lines, HEK293 is widely utilized in viral vector production due to its high transfectivity, rapid growth rate, and ability to grow in a serum-free, suspension culture.

HEK293 cells are easy to grow and maintain in culture. They are also highly amenable to transfection, delivering excellent transfection efficiencies. Thus, HEK293 cells are a preferred cell line for transfection experiments to produce gene therapies or gene-modified cell therapies.

Specialty media designed for HEK293 cells provides the optimal quantities of necessary nutrients to allow maximum cell growth, enable transfection, and support the production of high viral titers. Ideally, cells should be cultured in chemically-defined, serum-free media to limit variability between batches and simplify regulatory approvals.

4Cell®HEK293 media portfolio is suitable for a wide variety of processes particularly the production of AAV, LV and Adenoviruses.
It is also suitable for the production of proteins and exosomes.
