Preclinical and GMP Growth Factors and Cytokines
Sartorius offers a large variety of growth factors and cytokines for ex vivo cell culture. These raw and ancillary materials are widely used in the field of cell and gene therapy as well as regenerative medicine.
CellGenix® growth factors and cytokines combine a maximum of quality and safety with excellent performance due to state-of-the-art production, stringent quality control and expert regulatory support. We follow a strict animal-derived component-free (ADCF) policy to ensure maximum safety of our growth factors and cytokines.
To ensure a seamless transition from preclinical development to commercial manufacturing, we offer CellGenix® cytokines and growth factors both in GMP and preclinical grade. Both product grades are produced under the same conditions in a GMP facility, using identical production steps and expression systems. This ensures an equal product quality and performance. Customized solutions, including bulk requests, can be provided to meet special manufacturing needs.

FAQs - Growth Factors and Cytokines
Growth factors are signaling molecules that regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. "Cytokine" was first used to define a subset of growth factors influencing immune and hemopoietic cells. However, it is now clear that cytokines can act on many different cell types and have diverse effects on proliferation and differentiation. Therefore, "cytokine" is now used more broadly and interchangeably with "growth factor."
Designed to meet the demands of translational research, our ‘preclinical grade’ cytokines are ideal to allow for a seamless transition from preclinical development to the clinical stage. CellGenix® preclinical and GMP cytokines are produced under the same conditions in a GMP facility, using identical production steps and expression systems. This ensures an equal product quality and performance.
The difference between both quality levels is that we offer a more comprehensive QC testing including tighter specifications and documentation for our GMP products. Our preclinical grade products therefore offer a cost-efficient alternative for the early development phase when safety and quality of ancillary materials have a lower priority.
Cytokines are added to cell cultures to promote proliferation and to maintain cells in the desired state or lineage by regulating proliferation and differentiation.
Cytokines and growth factors ensure differentiation and proliferation of the cell(s) of interest. They are critical cell culture media components, particularly when serum-and animal-free conditions or defined media are required.
Growth factors bind to receptors on the surface of cells and initiate signaling cascades that ultimately up- or downregulate genes involved in cell proliferation and growth.
