Volume, Density and Magnetism
Mass metrology extends beyond the determination of mass alone. At the highest levels of accuracy and traceability, the volume, density, and magnetic properties of mass standards become critical measurement parameters for weights according to OIML R111. Air buoyancy effects on mass are governed by volume and density, while magnetic susceptibility and magnetization can influence high-precision mass comparisons and reference weights. Advanced mass metrology therefore combines highly accurate mass comparators with specialized technologies for volume, density, and magnetic characterization.

Key features
The two load alternators operate synchronously in that one position in liquid is assigned to each second position in air. By using substitution weights, this innovative dual-weight alternator design makes it possible to directly compare the mass of a single-volume reference (e.g., silicon sphere) with a variety of weights in liquid.
The load alternators and weighing pans are designed as comb-type weight grabbers so that weights and groups of weights from 1 g to 1 kg can be transferred directly from the load alternator to the suspended weighing pan. Adapter plates are not required.
Sartorius has integrated the OIML R111-1 hydrostatic technique method, into its fully automatic volume comparator: With the VD1005, Sartorius supplies a system for density determination for weights in the range from 1 g up to 1 kg.
To measure the Magnetization, is mandatory to rotate the magnet. Susceptometer’s magnet is easy to operate by external rotary knob; marking for N-S orientation of the magnet.
The software that comes standard with the Susceptometer is exceptionally easy to use and enables data to be automatically transferred from the unit. It also supports the user through all required steps and provides assistance with settings before and during a measurement, including the weight’s shape designer with presets and free shape canvas for the user to draw unique shapes.
Applications Covered
Volume and Density determination of Solids, especially of Weights, Artifacts and Spheres according to OIML R111-1
Automatic-controlled complete solution for the density determination with a load alternator. It runs hands-free and comes with calculation software for density.
The system comes with a 9-position alternator in air and 9-position in liquid.
Thermally insulated and closed measurement cabinet contains water bath in liquid and built-in load alternator, sensors in air and liquid, motor for lifting and rotating mechanism, and a granite slab for the mass comparator with feedthrough for below-balance weighing.
Susceptometer Method
There are several methods for defining the magnetic properties of weights. The Susceptometer method is stipulated in OIML R111 for testing weights of classes E1, E2, F1 and F2. The new Susceptometer lets you easily and conveniently determine the susceptibility and magnetization of weights in accordance with OIML R111.
Density and volume references as an E1 stainless steel weight set
Consists of 10 stackable disc shape weights made of stainless steel with a polished surface. The set contains the following weights: 1 g, 2 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 50 g, 100 g, 200 g, 500 g, 1000 g. The material of the weights meets the requirements of OIML R111 class E1. Their mass is adjusted according to class E2. With PTB (YCS31-612-09) or DKD (YCS51-612-02) calibration certificate on the mass and volume of the weights.
Susceptibility calibrated standard
1 kg reference susceptibility standard YSZ01RSC with PTB certificate of magnetic susceptibility, in a wooden case for Sartorius Susceptometers, Metrology Intercomparisons, and SCs or Plot Studies.
