Services for mass comparators

A mass comparator is only as reliable as its last maintenance. Drift, contamination, and missed adjustments can quietly degrade its performance. Yet this performance is exactly what your work depends on—and what you must be able to rely on.

Sartorius mass comparator service keeps your instruments at peak performance throughout their entire lifecycle: from installation and preventive maintenance to adjustment and repair. All services are carried out by engineers who work directly with the original design data, firmware, and parts.

Whether you run an ISO 17025 calibration laboratory, a national metrology institute, or a high-precision manufacturing facility, your results remain repeatable, reliable, and audit-ready.

Our range of service solutions

Installation and setup

Reliable results from day one

A mass comparator is only as accurate as its installation allows. Leveling, vibration, air movement and temperature all affect the result. Sartorius service installs, levels and configures your comparator on site, checks the installation conditions, performs the initial startup and verifies basic performance. The result is a correctly installed instrument with documentation to support your internal quality records.

  • On-site installation, leveling and verification of installation conditions

  • Setup of standard parameters and adaptation to ambient conditions

  • Initial startup, functional tests and metrological equipment check

Maintenance & contracts

Stay within specification, year after year

Mass comparators work at the limit of what is physically measurable, which makes them sensitive to mechanical wear and environmental change. Left unchecked, these effects erode repeatability long before they become obvious. Sartorius preventive maintenance keeps your comparator mechanically and environmentally sound, with inspection, cleaning, repeatability checks, adjustment and preventive replacement of wear parts. A service contract helps define service intervals in advance, supports predictable service planning and can bundle calibration into one agreement so no interval is missed.

  • Inspection, cleaning and repeatability checks at defined intervals

  • Adjustment and preventive replacement of wear parts to maintain reliable performance

  • Service contracts with defined intervals and predictable service planning

Repair and spare parts

Restore performance with manufacturer-backed repair

When a mass comparator drifts out of specification or fails unexpectedly, fast and correct repair is critical. Sartorius service engineers diagnose the issue using model-specific service documentation, firmware knowledge and original Sartorius spare parts. After repair, performance is verified against manufacturer specifications, so your comparator returns to service with documented confidence.

  •  Diagnosis and repair by Sartorius-trained service engineers

  •  Original Sartorius spare parts for CCE and CCA mass comparators

  •  Post-repair performance verification against manufacturer specifications

Frquently asked questions

A mass comparator is a high-precision weighing instrument designed specifically to determine mass differences between a reference weight and a test weight, rather than measuring absolute mass. Unlike conventional analytical balances, mass comparators achieve standard deviations (repeatability) as low as 0.1 µg for the most precise models, making them essential for OIML E1 and E2 accuracy class weight calibration. They are used primarily in calibration laboratories, national metrology institutes and regulated industries.

A conventional analytical balance is designed for general weighing tasks and measures absolute mass. A mass comparator is optimized to resolve extremely small mass differences between a reference weight and an unknown weight, typically using the ABBA or ABA substitution weighing method. This substitution approach eliminates the influence of balance drift and buoyancy variations, achieving substantially lower measurement uncertainty than a standard balance.

For most calibration laboratories, annual preventive maintenance and calibration is the standard practice. In heavily regulated environments, or where the comparator operates under demanding conditions, shorter intervals may be appropriate. Sartorius recommends defining service intervals based on your process risk.

Yes. Sartorius offers service coverage for manual mass comparators (operated by a skilled metrologist) and fully automatic mass comparator systems (e.g. robotic weight-handling systems for high-throughput weight calibration). Service concepts are adapted to the specific model, degree of automation and operating environment. For automated systems, service can include verification of robotic mechanics and software-controlled weighing sequences, depending on model and local service scope.
