Sartoclear® Depth Filters for Scalable Clarification

Sartoclear® Depth Filters are purpose-built for high-performance harvest clarification, combining cellulose, diatomaceous earth, and a resin binder to efficiently retain high particle loads. They can be used directly after the bioreactor in a single-step process, integrated into a two-step filtration train with coarse and fine depth filters, or positioned downstream of a centrifuge for secondary clarification. Available in multiple scalable formats, Sartoclear® Depth Filters ensure consistent performance from development through commercial manufacturing across a wide range of feed characteristics.

Applications:

  • Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and recombinant proteins
  • Adeno-associated virus (AAV) and other viral vectors
  • Aggregate removal after pH inactivation
  • Microbial lysate clarification
  • Precipitate removal from sera and plasma
  • Particle and colloid removal from intermediates
  • Media filtration

Find The Optimal Grade for Your Application

The Sartoclear® DL-Series consists of high-capacity depth filters with two distinct filtration layers: a coarse primary layer followed by a finer secondary layer, enabling efficient removal of a broad range of particles in a single step.

The Sartoclear® DL-Series is pre-selected and optimized for the most common biopharmaceutical clarification applications.

 GradeDescription
Primary
Clarification
DL90For primary (coarse) clarification.
DL75For primary clarification. In AAV clarification, the filters can also serve as a single-stage clarification solution directly followed by a sterile filter.
Primary | Secondary ClarificationDL60Suitable for both primary and secondary clarification. In some cases (e.g., AAV clarification), the filters can be used as a single-stage solution followed by a sterile filter.
Secondary ClarificationDL20For secondary clarification following depth filtration, centrifugation, or perfusion.
DL10For secondary clarification following depth filtration or centrifugation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depth filtration is a method that captures particles within the filter media's porous structure. It is especially effective for high particle loads and complex feed streams. Unlike surface filtration, depth filtration uses the full depth of the media, offering efficient contaminant removal.

Depth filtration provides high particle retention capacity, making it ideal for processing large volumes of complex feed streams. By utilizing the entire filter media, it minimizes clogging and extends filter life. This makes it particularly useful in biopharmaceutical harvest clarification, where reliable, high-capacity filtration is essential.

Depth filtration captures particles within the media, making it ideal for high particle loads and complex feeds. Membrane filtration retains particles on the surface, providing precise separation for applications like sterile filtration. Depth filtration excels in handling large particles, while membrane filtration offers finer control.

To select the right depth filter, consider factors like particle size, feed stream composition, and process volume. Evaluate the filter's capacity, flow rate, and application compatibility. For tailored recommendations, consult with our filtration experts or review our product datasheets for further guidance.

Clarification in bioprocessing involves removing solid impurities from cell culture or fermentation broth. This critical step prepares the fluid for downstream purification, ensuring it’s free of particles for further processes like chromatography or sterile filtration.
