Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Our Sartobind® and Sartobind Convec® membrane chromatography portfolio is linearly scalable from small-scale R&D (e.g., Nano, 3 mL) to GMP-grade capsules up to 1,200 mL or more. Since convective flow dominates over diffusive transport, performance remains consistent across scales, reducing the need for re-optimization at larger volumes.
Sartobind® Q is also commonly used for flow-through polishing steps, such as removing host cell proteins (HCPs), DNA, endotoxins, and virus particles from monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins. Sartobind® Q gamma is also used for the Adenovirus and pDNA capture step. Its high flow rate, low pressure drop, and scalability make it suitable for both upstream clarification and downstream polishing in GMP manufacturing environments.
Sartobind Convec® D is designed for the chromatography capture step in the downstream process of lentivirus production.
Membranes use convective flow, resulting in short residence times and lower shear stress compared to resin columns. Also, elution under mild salt conditions (<500–750 mM NaCl) and reduced exposure to process-induced stressors help maintain infective particle integrity.
Our Sartobind Convec® D membranes allow DNA, proteins, and other host cell impurities to flow through, while selectively binding lentivirus particles. This enables a dual function: capture and partial purification in a single step. Sartobind Convec® D showed > 90% host cell protein removal.
Unlike traditional heparin-based resin columns, which have heparin from animal-based origin, Sartobind Convec® SC has a synthetic (chemical) based ligand. It features convection-driven flow, which minimizes diffusion limitations and enables faster processing of large biomolecules and viral particles, making it ideal for virus capture steps in vaccine manufacturing.
