Fogging Test With Cubis® II
Overview
High surface and interior temperatures can cause polymers, textiles and natural materials in automotive interiors to release volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs & SVOCs) at an accelerated rate. When these compounds condense on the cooler surface of the windshield, it can create a visibility problem for the driver.
The fogging test helps vehicle interior manufacturers identify and develop products that outgas SVOCs at a reduced rate. The fogging test procedure – outlined in DIN EN ISO 75201 – helps recreate auto interior outgassing in a timely, measurable and repeatable fashion.

- DIN Standard 75201 is a method developed by the German Institute for Standardization that allows automobile interior material manufacturers to test the levels of condensation/evaporation of volatile compound
- Potentially harmful VOCs and SVOCs found inside vehicles as a result of material manufacturing include benzene, styrene, toluene and acetaldehyde
- Fogging test helps to identify and develop products that outgas SVOCs at a reduced rate
- Two main methods are used for fogging tests: reflectometric and gravimetric tests
- Gravimetric test involves sample preparation and measurement of fogging condensate – the software invalidates failed samples and calculates results automatically
