“I wanted to be a writer. But I was just better at natural sciences.”

At Sartorius, ambitious women are creating a path for others to follow. There’s a lot we can learn from them at all levels of the business. In this interview, Jenny Li, Manager of Field Application Scientists for the company’s bioanalytics product portfolio in Shanghai, shares her thoughts on aspiring to a career in the sciences instead of becoming a writer and the challenges in her job.

Jenny, what did you want to become when you were younger – and did it work out?

When I was a child, I always wanted to be a writer. But I was just better at natural sciences. After I graduated from medical school, I got a job in the biological industry, and I’ve never regretted that decision.

Why? What excites you about your job?

I support our customers on site with our Incucyte and iQue products, helping them to fast-track scientific discoveries. This technology is very innovative and widely used in biopharma research as well as in cell therapy, for example. The challenge for me — or basically for everyone — is to keep up with the frontiers in these fields or even better: help define them. I need to continuously learn a lot about new technologies and applications, stay in touch, interact with users and understand their pain points in order to provide them with comprehensive and relevant products and technical solutions that support them to get their job done faster and more efficiently.

What do you believe to be your strengths in the business environment?

To me it's very important to be particularly approachable and attentive in the workplace. I believe this is very helpful especially for tasks that require focus and care. Other people, of course, bring in very different strenghts and in our teams, we give full play to everyone’s capabilities, supporting each other and cooperating for mutual improvement and development – regardless of gender.

Speaking of improvement: How does Sartorius help to empower you personally?

The management at Sartorius fully understands and supports me — when my family needs me but also when I want to grow my career. The company provides many training and development opportunities, including product trainings — even overseas — and leadership trainings. I really feel this environment and the people in it enable me to develop further.
