People at Sartorius: Abby Gao

Abby, what was your idea of a dream job as a child?

Since I was a child, I have always dreamed about being an engineer. I thought that would be a very cool and professional job. Today I know it is. I started off at Sartorius with my very first job: providing technical support for separation and purification products. And so far, I can only say, that I'm extremely happy to see my childhood dream come true.

What are the challenges in your job?

The greatest challenge for me, I believe, is that I often go on business trips — at least I did before the pandemic. I find myself physically weary at times. In 2020, I traveled almost every day to provide technical support as all our clients were racing to develop vaccines. However, I have faith that all the efforts will pay off and the vaccines will be available for everyone worldwide soon. At the same time, however, travelling a lot and being at the customers’ sites allows me to quickly gain experience in a short period of time, to understand what they need and how we can provide even better support. I am grateful for this.

Are there advantages or disadvantages to being a woman in your role?

At Sartorius, it doesn't matter if you are a man or a woman as long as you continue to improve your expertise in depth and in breadth — and support the customers, of course. I feel that it’s my strength to combine a sensitive and cooperative attitude with the ability to capture the essence of complex problems.  This makes it easier for me to gain the trust of customers.

How does Sartorius support your career growth?

Sartorius provides all employees with a collaborative platform to broaden our horizons and learn efficiently together with a large number of senior industry experts. Being in such an environment makes it easy to understand the cutting-edge technology as well as industry developments. At the same time, you can always find outstanding female role models who are willing to share how to work efficiently and balance work and life. I appreciate that a lot.
