In Germany, Sartorius is collaborating with the city of Göttingen and the Heinz Sielmann Foundation to create a wetland biotope in the south of Göttingen. On August 16, the groundbreaking ceremony took place with representatives from all project partners.

With this initiative, Sartorius aims to build an ecologically diverse, natural habitat for rare and endangered animals. While the Heinz Sielmann Foundation is responsible for coordinating the project, Sartorius will be covering the project costs of more than one million euros. The city of Göttingen has already provided the 16-hectare area – around 40 acres – at the Leine River, where the biotope is being created. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2021.

As part of the revitalization, a riparian forest, several shallow ponds, a larger pond and extensive grasslands will be created. A bird observation point and an adventure trail are also planned for interested citizens.

“Sustainability has been one of our core company values for many years. In addition to our corporate strategy geared to the long term, this also includes measures to protect and conserve our natural resources. I really look forward to seeing the finished biotope  and hope that the many nature lovers in Göttingen and the region will enjoy it." - Joachim Kreuzburg, CEO of Sartorius.

In February, the first preparatory measures had started ahead of schedule in consideration of the breeding season. Special attention will be paid to carefully execute the work for the biotope.

The protection of biodiversity and creation of natural habitats is part of Sartorius' sustainability programs. For example, the company recently implemented an extensive biodiversity project at its Yauco site in Puerto Rico.
