Members of the around 50 people strong Product Development Software team at Sartorius in Bangalore

The Sartorius Campus in Bangalore, India, is situated about 30 kilometers outside the city. The 12,000 m² production site with its picturesque gardens is home to more than 600 people who take care of manufacturing bioreactors and syringe filters as well as the respective components for biopharma production and life science research. Additionally, in downtown Bangalore, another Sartorius team of around 50 software experts work together in co-working spaces to digitize bioprocessing.

A Sense of Purpose and Holistic Contribution

As Head of Software Application Reliability, Adarsh leads the software team in India.  There are two things that are particularly special to him at Sartorius. Firstly, the company’s purpose: “I see my personal value in bringing digitalization to our biopharma customers, so that they can produce effective medicines faster and save more people’s lives. This purpose has been driving me from day one.”

And secondly, making a holistic contribution to this purpose. At the site outside Bangalore, the local software development team can literally see the software go into the systems and instruments for the global biopharma industry. “For a software developer, there's a strong sense of achievement in building a holistic understanding of a product including its hardware, software, and processes from concept design to commissioning. It requires a strong learning curve, and you need to be ambitious. But it’s definitely worth it.”

In addition to being close to operations, the team is also closely connected with around 100 IT colleagues at the site. “Through this we are able to create additional, valuable synergies.”

Making an Impact in a Global Team

The Bangalore software team, together with their colleagues in Germany, North America and the United Kingdom, strives to increase digitalization of Sartorius’ products and their customers’ processes to help unlock the potentials of biopharmaceutics. “In the past years, we have continuously invested in product automation and analysis of bioprocess data. With a leading control software, we support our customers in optimizing and digitalizing their processes, which leads to more efficient predictive and robust bioprocesses.”

In Bangalore, the proximity to production is a big advantage for fostering the teams’ competence and has helped to achieve something Adarsh is proud of: His team is contributing to a variety of Sartorius’ products across different business areas: BioBrain for Biostat® STR bioreactors, Flexsafe® ProMixer, BioSMB PD-Multi-Column Chromatography and Ambr® 15.

“Our responsibility is to ensure and continuously improve the performance of the software in these products, provide support for post-launch solutions, and manage and maintain updates in the software for products from acquisitions,” Adarsh explains.

For this, the team works with the Scaled Agile Framework, SAFe, a toolset of proven, integrated principles, workflow patterns and practices that guide the team in scaling lean and agile practices. “Our development and test teams here in India are part of the agile release train and actively contribute to program increment planning.”

New Site in Downtown Bangalore: Software R&D Center

Thanks to the enormous software talent pool in Bangalore, the team has grown very fast from 20 to almost 50 members over the past year. And looking forward, Adarsh sees plenty of exciting opportunities for Sartorius and his team. That is why, the team will move from co-working spaces to their own office site soon.

A software R&D center in downtown Bangalore is planned to be opened in early 2023 to be closer to where software talent feels at home. The new office space will bring together 150 software developers and IT experts from diverse functions, creating more synergies and enabling more knowledge exchange and collaboration.

“To meet the growing demand of digitalization, the Software R&D Center will cater the complete software ownership of more Sartorius’ products,” Adarsh explains. “At the same time, we will continue to work within the global team on further projects in software product development. I’m very much looking forward to seeing more talents join us for these tasks.”
