Sartorius achieves LEED Gold certification for Ann Arbor site

The life science group Sartorius has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4 Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for its Center of Excellence for Bioanalytics in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The designation recognizes the site’s high standards in sustainable construction and energy-efficient building operations.
Certification under the LEED framework is based on criteria such as energy efficiency, CO₂ emissions, water consumption, material selection, resource conservation and indoor environmental quality. To meet the stringent requirements, Sartorius made multi-million-dollar investments in the sustainability aspects of the brownfield facility’s design and construction. Measures include the use of certified sustainable materials, low-emission materials, on-site solar power generation, energy-efficient building systems with advanced air filtration and CO₂ monitoring, as well as electric vehicle infrastructure. Additional features such as LED lighting and a storm runoff pond further support the building’s overall performance.
“The LEED Gold certification represents a significant milestone for the Ann Arbor site and Sartorius, recognizing our efforts to integrate sustainability into our infrastructure and operations,” said Maurice Phelan, President of Sartorius North America. “Designed with sustainability in mind from the outset, the facility contributes to Sartorius’ climate targets, including the ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.”
The site, which opened in 2024, represents a total investment of more than 100 million US dollars and serves as a hub for the development and manufacturing of bioanalytical instruments, associated reagents, consumables and software solutions used for biopharma applications. In addition, it provides particle validation services and produces microcarriers.
In total, Sartorius operates six production sites in North America located in Yauco, Puerto Rico; Ashland and Marlborough in Massachusetts; New Oxford, Pennsylvania; Fremont, California; and Ann Arbor, Michigan. The company employs around 2,600 people across these locations, as well as its regional headquarters in Bohemia, New York, and its sales office in Newark, Delaware.
