Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike PVDF, Unisart® Nitrocellulose Blotting Membranes do not inherently contain fluorinated derivatives. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, also known as PFC, PFAS, PFOA, PFOS or PTFE are not intentionally used in the manufacturing process. Therefore, Unisart® Nitrocellulose Blotting Membranes offer a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for blotting applications, aligning with eco-conscious laboratory practices.

Unisart® Nitrocellulose Blotting Membranes are primarily used for protein and nucleic acid transfer in Western, Southern, and Northern blotting applications. They provide high protein-binding affinity and are compatible with colorimetric, chemiluminescent, and fluorescent detection methods. They are also suitable for dot-blot assays, providing excellent signal-to-noise ratios for protein and nucleic acid detection.

The choice of pore size depends on the molecular weight of the target protein being studied. The 0.45 µm pore size is recommended for most analytical blotting experiments, especially for larger proteins. The 0.22 µm pore size is particularly suited for transferring low-molecular weight proteins (<10-15 kDa) and nucleic acids that might pass through larger membrane pores, thereby minimizing sample loss.

No, nitrocellulose membranes do not require activation before use. They are ready to use without any pre-wetting or activation step, making them convenient and easy to integrate into your workflow.

It is recommended to store Unisart® Nitrocellulose Blotting Membranes at a constant temperature between 15–25 °C and a relative humidity between 40 – 60 %. Keep the membranes away from open flames, heat sources, light, and chemical vapors of any kind.

If stored according to our storage recommendations, Unisart® Blotting Membranes have a shelf-life of three years after their manufacturing date. The shelf-life is indicated on each Certificate of Analysis.

The paper separator plays a critical safety role and must remain in place on membrane rolls or sheets until processing. It helps reduce the decomposition rate of Unisart® membranes, which is why all Unisart® membranes are supplied exclusively with this protective separator.
