Four Steps for a Successful Onboarding

Around 4,500 new people joined Sartorius in 2021, with around 2,600 more that have come aboard in the first half of 2022. A four-step onboarding process aims to help them to quickly settle in, feel welcome and contribute to Sartorius’ vision of enabling “better health for more people”.

The Four Steps of the Onboarding Journey

New job, new responsibilities, new people, new corporate culture and sometimes even a new industry – starting-off at a new company is always exciting. This is why the Sartorius onboarding process is designed to make things easier for new joiners, help them feel welcome and get up to speed for their new roles.

Step 1 | It All Starts Long Before Day 1

The journey into a new job starts even before the first day of work.

Via the Candidate Portal, new joiners at Sartorius have the chance to get a first glimpse at the company through videos and information material that help them become familiar with the company, its people, culture, and values.

Also, many administrative tasks, such as reading and signing the Code of Conduct and the Anti-Corruption Code or adding information to their personal profile, can be completed here.

Erica Lim, who started in November 2021 as a Sales Representative in Singapore, remembers her pre-onboarding well for a special occasion:

“One of the most memorable moments during the pre-onboarding process was when I was invited to an informal lunch with the manager of General Sales in South-East Asia as well as the HR Recruiting Partner. After lunch, I was very sure that Sartorius was what I was looking for in a company.”

Step 2 | Welcome to the Team

After weeks of excitement, finally, the first day in the new job has come.

Several sites hold “Day 1” events at days when many people are joining the company. This includes site tours, company and brand presentations as well as business speed dating, for example.

The digital onboarding platform supports all new joiners in navigating their first days, weeks, and months. In addition, new employees will be welcomed by their managers and teams who introduce them to their role. Through the Buddy Program, managers can pair up new team members with other people within the company and help them make connections easily.

Mandatory trainings, e.g. for IT Security are also part of this onboarding step.

Logan Milton joined as a Digital Account Manager in the General Sales Team in the U.S. in December 2021. “The reason the onboarding was special to me was because all my team members – every single one of them - reached out, took the time to get to know me and extended their help.”

Step 3 | Getting up to Speed

During the first weeks, it is all about finding your way around and getting started in the new job.

For this, Sartorius offers a variety of trainings – virtually and in-person: from getting to know the people development processes, to MS Office tutorials to role-specific trainings for products and tools.

In most cases, new joiners are now being introduced to their projects and responsibilities, familiarize with working procedures, and take on their first tasks.

At the same time, anyone who could not participate in “Day 1” events or anyone who would like to refresh their knowledge has the opportunity to join virtual sessions, e.g. for the company presentation, basic brand trainings or site tours.

Step 4 | Deepening the Social, Cultural and Professional Integration

During the first few months, new joiners can further advance their social, cultural, and professional integration.

By now they are experienced in how their everyday work and contribution makes an impact and how it contributes to being part of the solution to medical progress.

The onboarding platform provides an overview of various employee communities at Sartorius, such as the Agile Enthusiasts Community, the Sartorius Business Women Association, or the LGBT+ Allies & Friends. These global communities support the cultural integration by connecting people with similar interests, let them exchange experiences, bring innovative ideas and help them grow with each other.

At this point, not only do many “former new joiners” now take an active role in supporting the onboarding of new colleagues, but it’s also time to share feedback on the onboarding experience to the managers and HR as well as through the anonymous bi-annual employee survey.

In February 2022 Kristina Walther started as a New Product Introduction Specialist in Germany. “The most special thing in my onboarding journey was the feeling to become part of a very familiar and global team that lives the Sartorius corporate values of sustainability, openness and enjoyment every single day with one common goal to simplify progress for our customers with our Sartorius products.”
